Wayne Bernard

Wayne Bernard laid to rest with help from equine friend, fulfilling long-made promise Dec 13, 2017. Rain drizzled down on Mickey the Clydesdale as the gentle giant waited patiently beside the church. Slowly, a hearse pulled up to meet the black and white draft horse. The trunk of the vehicle opened and the pallbearers carried the coffin onto a small cart, pulled by Mickey, who, with a signal from her handler, started the short journey to the grave. It was Wayne Bernards last ride and represented a promise fulfilled by an old friend. Bernard, 70, of Mayfield, passed away on Dec. 9. He was buried in the Geddie Memorial Cemetery in Springbrook on Wednesday. Driving the century-old wagon that carried Wayne to his final resting place was Elwin Sharpe, with Gary Allen in the passenger seat. Sharpe approached Waynes family shortly after his friends death, asking if theyd consider letting him fulfill an old gentlemans agreement. They agreed. About 20 or 25 years ago we used to be building wagons and stuff like that, recalled Sharpe. We had the idea that if one fella went, the other would take him to the grave, he said, his voice cracking. You do an honour. Its got to be done, so lets do it right. Wayne was well known in the Islands horseman community. His knowledge of horses, especially the big draft varieties, was extensive. He consulted with a few TV programs over the years, including the locally produced Emily of New Moon. He also provided wagon and sleigh rides to special occasions for many years. He was probably best known though for being the kindly, bearded, and perennially overall-wearing stableman of Cavendishs Avonlea Village. Theres a barn named in his honour there and he loved taking the visitors for rides and telling them stories. Paul Bernard, one of Waynes sons, said his dad would have loved his friends gesture. We just thought that was a fitting end, said Paul. Though, he added, once it was determined that a horse and wagon would help Wayne along to his resting place, they thought they should make sure he was dressed appropriately. He was buried in a new pair of bib overalls, with his straw hat. His dad would have been amused to no end by the arrangements and probably couldnt have seen himself going out any other way, said Paul. Colin.MacLean@JournalPioneer.com

Tractor draw

In the picture is Claude Dorgan, Charlie Harper, Weldon Rennie, Melvin Bernard and Denis Gallant. In 2008 West Prince Tired Iron Antique Club 2008 Inc sponsored a 4-H project to restore a 1948 Farmall Cub tractor. They sold tickets on the tractor and the winner was Melvin Bernard. In 2009 the club members approached Mr. Bernard to see if he would sell the tractor back to the club - he agreed so the club will be selling tickets on the tractor again this year. The winner can choose to take the tractor or $2500.00 in cash. With the proceeds of the ticket sales last year donations were made to the Westisle Breakfast Club, West Prince 4-H and the West Prince Caring Cupboard. The proceeds of tickets sales will be donated to these organizations again this year. The draw will be made during the annual Antique Tractor Run on September 27th - location/time announced later. Tickets are available from club members or at D & M Tools Ltd, Bloomfield 902-859-3887. The tractor will be on display with members selling tickets at various community events during the summer

4 H - West Prince Tired Iron Antique Club Project

West Prince Graphic - January 02 2008 West Prince 4-H District to restore vintage tractor by David MacDonald The 1948 Farmall Cub tractor currently awaiting restoration in Bloomfield has seen better days, but with some hard work, it will look as good as new. Six members from various clubs in the West Prince 4-H District are getting ready to start work in restoring the vintage piece of farm equipment, with the help from the members of the West Prince Tired Iron Antique Club. The project involves more than just restoration and will also be a fundraiser for the two clubs. Tickets will soon go on sale, with the lucky winner receiving the tractor. Proceeds from the sale of the tickets will be split between the two organizations and help pay for restoration costs. The winning ticket will be drawn on September 6, 2008 at the Rural Youth Fair. The youth who will be taking on the project include three students who are taking the mechanics program at Westisle Composite High School. President Gordon Ramsay said the West Prince 4-H District is the only one east of Ontario doing this type of restoration project. We had small engines before at the West Prince district; that was the extent for mechanics. The 4-H organization is open to youth up to age 21, but many members leave much earlier than that. Mr Ramsay hopes that projects such as this will help keep members longer and perhaps attract new ones. This is something we're going to do to try to retain them and to get a few more. He said this particular project is a good one for youth. Besides restoration, the youth also have to keep a record of their purchases of what they need for the restoration. The youth will be receiving a workbook that will help them to develop a plan for the project. The restoration work on this particular tractor will be extensive, said Denis Gallant, president of the Tired Iron Antique Club. We have to do the motor, the breaks, the four tires. It's got to be completely sanded and painted, and refurbished to a new condition. The cost of restoring the tractor would be about $2,500, Mr Gallant said. The Tired Iron Club has 51 members, all with antique tractors from different years, and meets the first Thursday of every month. Mr Gallant himself owns the oldest antique vehicle, a steel wheel model from 1919. The club has been involved in a number of events, including the annual car show held at the Bloomfield Provincial Park. Members also took part in a tractor run this past summer where members drove their antiques for 30 miles. Every tractor made it, Mr Gallant said. It will take a number of months for the Farmall Cub to be restored, but people may get a chance to see the work in progress, as plans are to display the tractor at various fairs and parades during 2008. The youth are planning to get together before the end of the Christmas holidays to start making plans for the beginning of the project. The youth don't believe this project will be too daunting of a task. I used to do cars with my dad so this wouldn't be too much different, said Charlie Adams. It 's older so it should be simpler.

Sowing the seeds of charity

Members of the Tired Iron Antique Club used their antique tractors and equipment to prepare a 40-acre field in Bloomfield for grain. Proceeds from the sale of the crop will support charity. Manning the antique tractors are, from left, Levi Rayner, Eric Shaw, Garth Wilkie, Weldon Rennie, Dennis Gallant and Willey Dunbar. Eric McCarthy/Journal Pioneer BLOOMFIELD It was almost a shame to send their shiny tractors through a dusty field, but members of the Tired Iron Antique Club didnt seem to mind. They are proud of their dependable machines and proud to be supporting a special project. The club members recently planted 10 acres of barley and close to 30 acres of oats in a field in Bloomfield. Once harvested, the proceeds will be used to support the West Prince Caring Cupboard and the Canadian Foodgrains Bank. This is a project in the works, said club member Garth Wilkie, admitting the size of their contribution will depend on the amount of support they receive along the way. The club has sent letters to fuel, fertilizer, chemical and machinery suppliers, as well as other businesses, seeking support. The more money they raise through donations, Wilkie explained, the more profit they will have for charity. For every dollar the group donates to the Foodgrains Bank, the federal government will contribute four dollars. The Tired Iron Club was formed two years ago and incorporated last month. All 39 members own antique tractors or other pieces of antique farm equipment. For the recent grain-sowing demonstration, members pulled disc and lever harrows through the field to break up clumps from several years without cultivation. They used a vintage drill seeder to sow the grain. The crop was planted in the field where a new hospital for West Prince had been proposed. The Liberal government has placed a moratorium on hospital construction, thus making the field available for farming again. The club is renting the field for a nominal fee of a dollar a year. We were picking rocks out of the operating room this morning, quipped club member Dennis Gallant. Gallant said the club will be keeping the fields headland mowed and will be holding other demonstrations there, including a tractor rodeo and the fall harvest.
